Yehuda Kelner - Man's Potential
Updated: Nov 15, 2019
The Pasuk in Bereishis 1:27 says "ויברא אלוקים את האדם בצלמו בצלם אלוקים ברא אותו וכו" - "So G-d created man in His image, in the image of G-d He created him, etc".
Q: What does it mean when it uses the לשון of "בצלם אלוקים"-"In the image of G-d"? G-d doesn't have an image?!
A: First let's define what אלוקים means. The Sforno writes that the term אלוקים, used in a comparable sense, can be applied to every intelligent force that isn't connected to physical matter which is perfect and is infinite, like G-d, angels, and judges.
Therefore צלם - image means that a man is created in the form of G-ds intellect. Another way of putting it is that G-made us as a frame and it is our responsibility to fill that frame. Which mandates man to think and act like G-d. If man does not think and act like G-d then he will self destruct, as it says in Tehillim 49:12 “אדם בקר ולא יבין נמשׁל כּבּהמות נדמו” - “Man is in his splendor but does not understand, he is like the beasts that perish”. To ignore and reject this great potential that G-d has given to man is to ignore and reject G-d himself and the unique status of אדם - man, which makes him a mere physical being, no more than an animal.
